Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas tops League Table for Legal Advisors to M&A deals in H1 2020

Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas (CAM) topped the Venture Intelligence League Table for Legal Advisor to M&A Transactions for the half-year ending June 2020. CAM advised M&A deals worth USD 16.9 Billion (across 40 qualifying deals). CAM was followed by AZB & Partners (AZB, USD 9.7 Billion across 28 deals) and Davis Polk & Wardwell (USD 5.7 Billion) in second and third place respectively. Khaitan & Co. (KCO, USD 2.2 Billion across 25 deals) and Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas (SAM, USD 2 Billion across 6 deals) completed the top five.


The Venture Intelligence League Tables, the first such initiative exclusively tracking transactions involving India-based companies, are based on the value of PE and M&A transactions advised by Financial and Legal Advisory firms.

During the latest quarter, AZB and Davis Polk & Wardwell advised Reliance Industries in the USD 5.7 Billion strategic investment by Facebook into its communications unit Jio Platforms. CAM advised the USD 2.7 Billion acquisition of Lummus Technology by Haldia Petrochemicals. Platinum Partners, SAM and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett advised KKR’s majority stake acquisition in JB Chemicals.


Among global firms, Davis Polk & Wardwell, followed by Simpson Thacher & Bartlett (USD 618 million) and White & Case (USD 210 million).

CAM also topped the tables in by deal volume with 40 deals. AZB took the second spot with 28 deals, followed by KCO with 25 deals. J Sagar Associates (JSA, 12 deals) and Trilegal (10 deals) completed the top five.


By Industry

CAM topped in Infrastructure having advised deals worth USD 9.6 Billion. AZB came second (USD 6.6 Billion), followed by Davis Polk & Wardwell (USD 5.7 Billion). S&R Associates (USD 1.5 Billion) and KCO (USD 1.1 Billion) completed the top five.

In Banking, Financial Services and Insurance (BFSI), CAM topped the table with USD 6.2 Billion. It was followed by AZB (USD 2 Billion) and Argus Partners (USD 1.3 Billion). DSK Legal and KCO took the fourth and fifth spots respectively.

SAM topped in the Manufacturing, advising deals worth USD 1.2 Billion, followed by KCO (USD 862 million). Platinum Partners and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett shared the third spot with USD 414 million. By deal volume, Khaitan topped with 9 deals, followed by AZB with 5 deals. With 3 deals, JSA took the third spot.

In IT & ITeS, Trilegal topped the table having advised deals worth USD 612 million. AZB took the second spot with deals worth USD 375 million. Samvad Partners took third place with USD 354 million. Advaita Legal (USD 350 million) and KCO (USD 267 million) completed the top five.

Private Equity-Venture Capital (PE-VC) investments in India during the quarter ended June 2023 (Q2'23), at $9.85 Billion across 182 deals, registered a 33% decrease compared to the same period in 2022 (which saw $14.6 Billion being invested across 371 deals). The investment amount however rose 74% compared to the immediate previous quarter (which saw $5.7 Billion being invested across 181 deals), shows data from  Venture Intelligence , a research service focused on private company financials, transactions, and their valuations. Aeka Advisors and Ambit claim the No.2 & 3 slot Avendus topped the Venture Intelligence League Table for Transaction Advisor to Private Equity Transactions for Q1 2023 advising 5 deals worth $808 million. Aeka Advisors stood second having advised 3 deals worth $228 million. Ambit followed with 4 deals worth $160 million.
