IDFC Alternatives to create a platform for renewable energy assets: Mint

A Mint article titled  IDFC Alternatives to create a platform for renewable energy assets quotes Venture Intelligence data on investments in the Renewable Energy space: In the last two years, the renewable energy space, especially solar and wind power, has seen a lot of private capital flowing in. Recently, Greenko, which is a developer of wind and small hydro power projects, secured $230 million from sovereign wealth funds of Abu Dhabi and Singapore. Last year, emerging markets-focused private equity major Actis Llp also created a renewable energy platform under Ostro Energy with initial commitment of $230 million. Further Consolidation in Renewable Energy Space?: Mint

In an article titled " Tata Power-Welspun deal brings focus back to M&As in renewables ", Mint's Swaraj Singh Dhanjal uses Venture Intelligence data to forecast consolidation in the green energy space: 1. According to Venture Intelligence, the year 2015 saw 14 M&A deals in the renewable space worth $2.27 Billion. (2016 has seen only 3 M&A deals in the Renewable Space including the Tata Power - Welspun Deal) 2. Opportunities for M&A exist in renewable project companies that were built in the in earlier waves of renewable energy development. (Want a Peek into the List? Try out our Cleantech Deals Database ) 3. Large Companies are actively pursuing M&A route to scale up due to the long time scale required for pre-development work, such as in wind, or the uncertainties of competitive bidding in solar (e.g. solar bids routinely attracting 60-70 bidders). M&A guarantees scaling-up in a manner that green-field development cannot. 4. Highly...

Clean Energy: The Promise & The Pain

Businessworld has a Cover Story on the topic with special focus on the travails of wind energy in Tamilnadu , hydel energy in Uttarakhand and the emerging rooftop solar opportunity . Tamil Nadu has an installed capacity of 6,969 MW, or 40 per cent of our total wind energy capacity of 17,352 MW and 28 per cent of the total renewable energy capacity. Wind energy also accounts for 12.64 per cent of the electricity generated in the state (9,763 MU out of 77,218 MU). More than 95 per cent of the country’s wind energy potential is in the coastal states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. And while Karnataka has the largest potential, best wind sites are in Tamil Nadu. Four prominent passes in the state — Palghat, Shencottah, Aralvoimozhi and Kambam —  have average annual wind speeds ranging from 18 km/hr to 25 km/hr. In Karnataka, the average is about 10 km/hr.   Tamil Nadu, however, is power deficit — the average power availabil...
