Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas (CAM) topped the Venture Intelligence League Table for Legal Advisor to M&A Transactions for the nine months ending September 2020. CAM advised M&A deals worth $20.9 billion (across 54 qualifying deals). It was followed by AZB & Partners ($15.8 billion across 40 deals) and Davis Polk & Wardwell ($10.2 billion across 2 deals) in second and third place respectively. Trilegal ($6.5 billion across 23 deals) and Khaitan & Co. ($6.2 Billion across 40 deals) completed the top five.
The Venture Intelligence League Tables, the first such initiative exclusively tracking transactions involving India-based companies, are based on the value of PE and M&A transactions advised by Financial and Legal Advisory firms.
Among the largest deals in this quarter, AZB, Davis Polk & Wardwell, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and J Sagar Associates (JSA) advised $4.5 Billion investment by Google into Reliance Jio platforms. CAM, Khaitan, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas (SAM), Shearman & Sterling, Trilegal and Wadia Ghandy & Co. advised RIL group's acquisition of Future Group's retail business for $3.4 billion. AZB advised Japan-based listed Orix Corporation's USD 980 million investment in Hyderabad-based renewable energy company Greenko Energy Holdings.
Among foreign law firms, Davis Polk & Wardwell came on top having advised 2 deals worth $10.2 billion. They were followed by Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer with $4.5 billion (1 deal). Shearman & Sterling came in third having advised 2 deals worth $3.4 billion.

CAM also topped the tables in by deal volume with 54 deals. AZB and Khaitan took the second spot having advised 40 deals each, followed by Trilegal with 23 deals. JSA (17 deals) and SAM (13 deals) completed the top five.
By Industry
AZB topped the Infrastructure sector having advised deals worth $12 billion. Davis Polk & Wardwell came second with deals worth $10.2 billion followed by CAM ($10 billion) in third place. JSA ($4.7 billion) and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer ($4.5 billion) took the fourth and fifth spots respectively.
Under Other Services, CAM ($3.38 billion) topped the table followed by Trilegal, Shearman & Sterling, Wadia Ghandy & Co., SAM and Khaitan, each advising one deal worth $3.37 billion.
CAM topped the BFSI sector having advised deals worth $6.2 billion, followed by AZB ($2.4 billion) in second place. Argus Partners took the third spot having advised deals worth $1.3 billion. By deal volume, CAM topped the table having advised 10 deals followed by AZB with 8 deals. Khaitan advised 3 deals taking the third spot.
Under Engg. & Construction, CAM topped the tables having advised deals worth $3.5 billion. Link Legal took the second spot with deals worth $348 million. The third spot was held by S&R Associates and L&L Partners each having advised deals worth $321 million.
