Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas tops League Table for Legal Advisors to Private Equity deals in in Q1 2020
Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas (CAM) topped the Venture Intelligence League Table for Legal Advisors to Private Equity (PE) Transactions for the quarter ending March 2020. CAM advised PE deals worth $1.6 Billion (across 23 qualifying deals) during the period. Khaitan & Co. came in second at $1.4 Billion (across 16 deals), followed by Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas (SAM) ($1.2 Billion across 13 deals) in third place. Trilegal ($886 million across 13 deals) and AZB & Partners ($597 Billion across 12 deals) completed the top five.
The Venture Intelligence League Tables, the first such initiative exclusively tracking transactions involving India-based companies, are based on value of PE and M&A transactions advised by Transaction and Legal Advisory firms.
Among the largest deals in the latest quarter, CAM, Khaitan, SAM, Trilegal and Kirkland & Ellis advised the $568 million investment in distressed RattanIndia Power by a consortium of investors including Goldman Sachs and Varde Partners. AZB, CAM and S&R Associates advised Canadian private equity investor Brookfield’s $205 million investment in IndoStar Capital Finance. CAM also advised General Atlantic’s $200 million investment in Byjus Classes.
Among foreign firms, Kirkland & Ellis came on top advising deal worth $568 million. Fenwick and West LLP came in second advising deal worth $110 million. Goodwin Procter came in third advising 2 deals worth $97 million.

Burgeon Law topped the tables in terms of deal volume advising 30 deals during Q1'20. CAM came second with 23 deals. This was followed by Samvad Partners (17 deals) and Khaitan & Co. (16 deals) in third and fourth places respectively. Algo Legal, SAM and Trilegal shared the fifth spot advising 13 deals each.
By Industry
Among Private Equity transactions in IT & ITeS, Algo Legal ($284 million) stood first followed by J Sagar Associates ($267 million). Samvad Partners took the third spot with $246 million. Trilegal ($179 million) and L&L Partners ($153 million) came in at fourth and fifth places respectively. Burgeon Law stood in first place by deal volume, advising 16 deals followed by Samvad Partners (11 deals) and Algo Legal (10 deals) in the second and third spots. CAM (6 deals) and JoyceLaw (5 deals) completed the top five.
In Financial Services, CAM topped the table with $427 million, followed by AZB with $228 million. S&R Associates came in third ($205 million) followed by Khaitan ($152 million) and Veritas Legal ($102 million) in fourth and fifth spot respectively.
Khaitan & Co. topped in Healthcare & Life Sciences advising deals worth $304 million, followed by CAM ($141 million) in second place and IndusLaw ($114 million) in third place. Pioneer Legal ($75 million) and Algo Legal ($49 million) occupied the fourth and fifth place.
