AZB & Partners tops League Table for Legal Advisors to Private Equity deals in 2022


SAM and CAM claim the No.2 & No.3 slots

AZB & Partners (AZB) topped the Venture Intelligence League Table for Legal Advisor to Private Equity Transactions in 2022. The firm advised PE deals worth $18.9 Billion (across 134 qualifying deals) during the period. Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas (SAM) ($18.8 Billion across 135 deals) and Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas (CAM) ($13.77 Billion across 103 deals) took the second and third spots. Khaitan & Co. ($11.75 Billion across 131 deals) and Trilegal ($11.37 Billion across 94 deals) completed the top five.


Among the larger Private Equity deals during 2022, CAM advised JC Flowers ARC's acquisition of INR 48,000 Cr stressed assets of Yes Bank. CAM and SAM advised $1.2 Billion acquisition of Suven Pharmaceuticals by Advent International. AZB & Partners advised KKR’s exit from Max Healthcare.

The Venture Intelligence League Tables, the first such initiative exclusively tracking transactions involving India-based companies, are based on the value of PE and M&A transactions advised by Financial and Legal Advisory firms.

Among foreign firms, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett came on top having advising 3 deals worth $1.14 Billion. Cleary Gottlieb Steen Hamilton took the second spot having advised 3 deals worth $1.11 Billion. Kirkland & Ellis came third having advised 2 deals worth $846 million and Slaughter & May took the fourth spot with 1 deal worth $526 million. Gunderson Dettmer took the fifth spot advising 5 deals worth $264 million.

Burgeon Law topped the tables in terms of deal volume advising 187 deals during the year. IndusLaw took the second spot with 159 deals. This was followed by SAM with 135 deals. AZB & Partners took the fourth spot with 134 deals, and Khaitan & Co. completed the top five with 131 deals.

Among foreign firms, Gunderson Dettmer topped the table in terms of deal volume advising 5 deals. Goodwin Procter came in second, advising 4 deals. Simpson Thacher & Bartlett and Cleary Gottlieb Steen Hamilton advised 3 deals each.



By Industry

Among PE transactions in the IT & ITeS industry (by value), SAM ($7.1 Billion) stood first followed by AZB ($7.06 Billion). CAM ($4.7 Billion) and Khaitan & Co. ($3.7 Billion) took the third and fourth spots respectively. IndusLaw ($3.4 Billion) completed the top five. By deal volume, Burgeon Law (124 deals) topped the table followed by IndusLaw (119 deals) and SAM (69 deals). AZB took the fourth spot with 67 deals and Khaitan & Co. completed the top five with 65 deals.

Under the Financial Services industry, CAM topped the table by value advising worth $4.3 Billion across 12 deals followed by AZB advising deals worth $3.5 Billion across 15 deals. SAM took the third spot by value and top spot by volume having advised deals worth $2.8 Billion across 19 deals.

Under the Healthcare sector, AZB topped the table advising 11 deals worth $2.4 Billion, followed by CAM with 9 deals worth $1.93 Billion. Khaitan (15 deals worth $1.92 Billion) and SAM (7 deals worth $1.75 Billion) took the third and fourth spots respectively. J Sagar Associates (6 deals worth $530 million) completed the top five.

Trilegal (7 deals worth $1.2 Billion) topped the PE in Real Estate transactions. AZB advised 6 deals worth $1.02 Billion and Khaitan  advised 3 deals worth $939 million.

Private Equity-Venture Capital (PE-VC) investments in India during the quarter ended June 2023 (Q2'23), at $9.85 Billion across 182 deals, registered a 33% decrease compared to the same period in 2022 (which saw $14.6 Billion being invested across 371 deals). The investment amount however rose 74% compared to the immediate previous quarter (which saw $5.7 Billion being invested across 181 deals), shows data from  Venture Intelligence , a research service focused on private company financials, transactions, and their valuations. Aeka Advisors and Ambit claim the No.2 & 3 slot Avendus topped the Venture Intelligence League Table for Transaction Advisor to Private Equity Transactions for Q1 2023 advising 5 deals worth $808 million. Aeka Advisors stood second having advised 3 deals worth $228 million. Ambit followed with 4 deals worth $160 million.
