Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas tops League Table for Legal Advisors to M&A deals in Q1 2023

Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas and Bathiya Legal claim the No.2 & No.3 slots

Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas (CAM) topped the Venture Intelligence League Table for Legal Advisor to M&A Transactions by value during Q1 2023. The firm advised M&A deals worth $2.9 Billion (across 23 qualifying deals) during the period. Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas (SAM) took the second spot, having advised 8 M&A deals worth $2.5 Billion. Bathiya Legal ($2.1 Billion across 7 deals) and Shearman & Sterling ($1.2 Billion across 2 deals) took the third and fourth spots, respectively. AZB & Partners (AZB) ($1.1 Billion across 16 deals) completed the top five.






The Venture Intelligence League Tables, the first such initiative exclusively tracking transactions involving India-based companies, are based on the value of PE and M&A transactions advised by Financial and Legal Advisory firms.

Among the largest M&A deals during Q1 2023, SAM advised GMR Airports Infrastructure on its $1.8 Billion acquisition of GMR Airports from Groupe ADP. CAM and Bathiya Legal advised the $943 million acquisition of Jaypee Infratech by Suraksha Realty. Shearman & Sterling and Samvad Partners advised the $656 million merger of Worldwide Webb Acquisition Corp. with Aeries Technology.




Among foreign firms, Shearman & Sterling came on top having advised 2 deals worth $1,232 million. Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Ropes & Gray were in the next spot, having advised 1 deal worth $300 million. They were followed by Gibson Dunn, with 1 deal worth $65 million.

CAM took the top spot with 23 deals, followed by Khaitan & Co. with 20 deals. AZB (16 deals) and IndusLaw (9 deals) took the third and fourth spots, respectively. SAM and Trilegal completed the top five with 8 deals each.




By Industry

Samvad Partners topped the table in the IT & ITeS industry, having advised 2 deals worth $658 million, followed by Shearman & Sterling (1 deal worth $656 million) and Khaitan & Co. (6 deals worth $513 million).

Under the Healthcare sector, SAM topped the table, having advised 3 deals worth $633 million, followed by Bathiya Legal with 4 deals worth $615 million. Shearman & Sterling (1 deal worth $576 million) and Khaitan & Co. (5 deals worth $371 million) took the third and fourth spots, respectively. AZB (3 deals worth $313 million) completed the top five.

Under the Engg. & Construction industry, CAM (2 deals worth $943 million) and Bathiya Legal (1 deal worth $943 million) topped the table. Anagram Partners took the second spot, advising 1 deal worth $11.5 million.

PE-VC investments in Q2'23 decline 33% to $9.9 Billion

Private Equity-Venture Capital (PE-VC) investments in India during the quarter ended June 2023 (Q2'23), at $9.85 Billion across 182 deals, registered a 33% decrease compared to the same period in 2022 (which saw $14.6 Billion being invested across 371 deals). The investment amount however rose 74% compared to the immediate previous quarter (which saw $5.7 Billion being invested across 181 deals), shows data from  Venture Intelligence , a research service focused on private company financials, transactions, and their valuations. PE-VC investments fall 38% in 2023 to below $30 B

The value of investments by Private Equity - Venture Capital (PE-VC) firms in India fell by 38% to less than $30 Billion in 2023. PE-VC firms invested $29.7 Billion (across 756 deals) in Indian companies in 2023, compared to $47.6 Billion (across 1,362 deals) in the previous year, reports Venture Intelligenc e, a research service focused on private company financials, transactions, and their valuations.
