PE-VC investments end 2024 at $31-B; Figures comparable to '23

Private Equity - Venture Capital (PE-VC) firms invested $31.1 Billion (across 1,021 deals) in Indian companies in 2024, marginally lower (by 5%) compared to the $32.9 Billion (across 993 deals) in 2023, reports Venture Intelligence, a research service focused on private company financials, transactions, and their valuations. (Note: These figures exclude PE investments in Real Estate).                                                                                                                                   


2024 witnessed 74 mega deals ($100 M+ rounds) worth $20.7 Billion, compared to 75 such investments worth $23.2 Billion in 2023. The $2.5 Billion acquisition of the Indian business of telecom infrastructure provider American Tower Corporation (ATC) by Brookfield was the largest PE-VC investment in 2024. This was followed by the $1.3 Billion fund raise by Quick-Commerce unicorn Zepto - across three tranches (in June, August and November). The $900 Million majority stake acquisition in the Chennai, India- and USA-based IT Services firm Altimetrik by TPG Capital ; KKR’s $840 million acquisition of the Bengaluru-based medical devices maker Healthium Medtech.and the $554 Million acquisition of Chennai-based Shriram Housing Finance Ltd (SHFL) by Warburg Pincus completed the Top 5 deals of 2024.

2024 saw Five "Unicorn" companies (VC-funded startups valued at $1 Billion or more) being created, compared to just 2 in 2023 . Overall, Unicorn Startups in India attracted $356 Million worth of investments in 2024, up by 22% compared to the previous year (which saw $291 Million invested in Unicorn Startups).  


By Industry

IT & ITeS companies accounted for $10.8 Billion of the total PE-VC investment pie in 2024, a increase of 13% when compared with 2023 (which saw $9.6 Billion being invested). The USD 1.3 Billion investment raised by quick commerce firm Zepto topped the table, followed by the $ 900 million acquisition of Altimetrik by TPG Capital.


The BFSI industry attracted $4.4 Billion during 2024 - which is a 20% increase from the $3.6 Billion raised during the previous year. The $554 Million majority stake acquisition of Shriram Housing Finance by Warburg Pincus led the industry table followed by the $408 million minority stake acquisition of Aavas Financiers by CVC Capital Partners and $400 million secondary investment in Vastu Housing Finance Corp by 360 ONE, Creation Investments, Norwest, Others, TA Associates.

The Healthcare & Life Sciences industry saw $3.7 Billion worth of investments in 2024 - a 34.2% decrease compared to the $5.6 Billion invested in 2023. Healthcare investments in 2024 was led by the $840 Million acquisition of Healthium Medtech by KKR, followed by $300 million investments in Baby Memorial Hospital (by KKR) and in Apollo 247 (by Advent International).

Avendus tops League Table for Transaction Advisors to PE deals in H1'24

Citi and Ambit claim the No.2&3 slots Avendus topped the Venture Intelligence League Table for Transaction Advisor to Private Equity Transactions in H1’2024 advising 12 deals worth $2.4 Billion. Citi stood second, having advised 1 deal worth $2 Billion. Ambit followed with 7 deals worth $797 million. Kotak Mahindra Capital ($735 million across 2 deals) and Ernst & Young ($657 million across 7 deals) completed the top five for H1’ 2024. The  Venture Intelligence League Tables , the first such initiative exclusively tracking transactions involving India-based companies, are based on the value of PE and M&A transactions advised by Financial and Legal Advisory firms. AZB tops League Table for Legal Advisors to PE deals in H1’24

Trilegal and Khaitan & Co. claim the No.2 & No.3 slots AZB & Partners (AZB) topped the Venture Intelligence League Table for Legal Advisor to Private Equity Transactions in H1 2024 advising 41 deals worth $5.4 Billion. It was followed by Trilegal ($5.1 Billion across 54 deals) and Khaitan & Co. (4.8 Billion across 46 deals) in the second and third spot respectively. Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas (CAM) ($2.9 Billion across 34 deals) and Talwar Thakore & Associates ($2.4 Billion across 9 deals) completed the top five.   Ernst & Young and Avendus claim the No.2 & No.3 slots Citi , which advised the  $2 Billion acquisition of the Indian business of American Tower Corporation by Brookfield,  topped the Venture Intelligence League Table for Transaction Advisors to M&A Deals   during H1 2024. Ernst & Young stood second advising 8 deals worth $1.5 billion. Avendus followed with 7 deals worth $1.2 billion. KPMG ($1.1 billion across 5 deals) and JM Financial ($900 million across 4 deals) completed the top five. Khaitan & Co. and J Sagar Associates claim the No.2 & No.3 slots AZB & Partners topped the Venture Intelligence League Table for Legal Advisor to M&A Transactions during H1 2024 advising 37 deals worth $14.8 Billion.
