AZB tops League Table for Legal Advisors to Private Equity deals in H1 2020

In a year thus far dominated by the mega investments in Jio Platforms, AZB & Partners (AZB) topped the Venture Intelligence League Table for Legal Advisor to Private Equity Transactions for the half-year ending June 2020. AZB advised deals worth USD 13 Billion (across 41 qualifying deals) during the period. Davis Polk & Wardwell (which advised the multiple Private Equity investments worth USD 9.8 Billion investment in Jio Platforms) and Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas (SAM) (USD 7.7 Billion across 23 deals) took the second and third spot respectively. Simpson Thacher & Bartlett (USD 2.9 Billion across 4 deals) and Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas (CAM) (USD 2.5 Billion across 32 deals) completed the top five.


The Venture Intelligence League Tables, the first such initiative exclusively tracking transactions involving India-based companies, are based on the value of PE and M&A transactions advised by Financial and Legal Advisory firms.

AZB and Davis Polk acted as legal advisors to Reliance Industries as it raised $9.8 Billion for its telecom arm Jio Platforms from global private equity firms. Other law firms including SAM, Paul Weiss, Nishith Desai Associates, Skadden, Latham & Watkins and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett acted as legal advisors to the various private equity investors in Jio Platforms. AZB, Covington Burling, CAM and White & Case advised Carlyle's USD 490 million investment in the Piramal Group's pharma business.


Among foreign firms, Davis Polk took the top spot followed by Simpson Thacher & Bartlett with USD 2.9 Billion (across 4 qualifying deals) in second place. Kirkland & Ellis took the third place with USD 2.1 Billion (across 2 deals).

Burgeon Law topped the tables advising 48 deals during the 6 months ending June 2020. AZB came in second place (with 41 deals) and Algo Legal in third with 33 deals. Three firms - CAM, Khaitan & Co. and Samvad Partners - shared the fourth spot with 32 deals each. J Sagar Associates (JSA) grabbed the the fifth spot with 26 deals.

Among foreign firms, Davis Polk topped the table with 10 deals. Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, Gunderson Dettmer and Goodwin Procter shared the second place with 4 deals each.


By Industry

In IT & ITeS, Induslaw topped the table by deal value with USD 720 million followed by Algo Legal with USD 600 million. JSA took the third spot with USD 427 million. Samvad Partners (USD 339 million) and Khaitan & Co. (USD 307 million) took the fourth and fifth spot respectively. 

By deal volume, Burgeon Law topped the table with 28 deals, closely followed by Algo Legal with 26 deals. Samvad Partners took the third place with 23 deals. Rajaram Legal (15 deals) and JSA (14 deals) completed the top five.  

AZB also topped in Healthcare & Lifesciences (by deal value) having advising 5 deals worth USD 894 million, followed by White & Case (USD 700 million across 2 deals) and CAM (USD 631 million across 4 deals).

In Financial Services, CAM topped the table by deal volume having advised 6 deals. SAM took second place with 5 deals. AZB came in third advising 4 deals. By deal value, AZB topped with USD 1.2 Billion. CAM (USD 438 million) and S&R Associates (USD 212 million) took the second and third positions respectively.

Citi tops League Table for Transaction Advisors to M&A deals in H1'24

  Ernst & Young and Avendus claim the No.2 & No.3 slots Citi , which advised the  $2 Billion acquisition of the Indian business of American Tower Corporation by Brookfield,  topped the Venture Intelligence League Table for Transaction Advisors to M&A Deals   during H1 2024.
