Trilegal tops League Table for Legal Advisors to M&A deals in Q1 2021

AZB and Khaitan & Co. claim the No.2 & No.3 slots

Trilegal topped the Venture Intelligence League Table for Legal Advisor to M&A Transactions for the quarter ending March 2021, advising 6 qualifying deals worth USD 6.3 Billion. It was followed by AZB & Partners (USD 4.1 Billion across 15 deals) and Khaitan & Co. (USD 3.6 Billion across 15 deals) in the second and third spots respectively. Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas (CAM, USD 3.1 Billion across 12 deals) and Shardhul Amarchand Mangaldas (SAM, USD 1.5 Billion across 8 deals) completed the top five.




The largest deal advised by Trilegal was Piramal Enterprises' acquisition of stressed mortgage lender DHFL for USD 5.2 Billion. AZB advised Wipro’s USD 1.5 Billion acquisition of CAPCO. CAM advised the Government of India's (GoI) stake sale in Tata Communications Limited (TCL)  for USD 1.2 Billion. Khaitan & Co., Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas, and Trilegal advised Byju's USD 1 Billion acquisition of Aakash Educational Services.




Among foreign firms, Baker McKenzie (USD 700 million), Kirkland & Ellis (USD 250 million) and Rosenblatt & Company (USD 250 million) emerged on top. DLA Piper came next USD 90 million.

AZB & Partners and Khaitan topped the tables in terms of M&A deal volume in Q1'21, advising 15 deals each. CAM took the second spot having advised 12 deals, followed by IndusLaw with 10 deals. DSK Legal and SAM (8 deals each) took the fourth spot and Trilegal (6 deals) completed the top five.




By Industry

CAM topped by value and volume in the Infrastructure industry having advised 6 deals worth USD 2.7 Billion. AZB advised deals worth USD 1.2 Billion, followed by Khaitan which advised deals worth USD 1 Billion.

Trilegal topped the BFSI industry advising deals worth USD 5.2 Billion, followed by Khaitan with USD 487 million. Wadia Ghandy & Co. and Economic Laws Practice took the third spot with USD 475 million.

Under IT & ITeS, AZB topped the table having advised 9 deals worth USD 2.47 Billion. It was followed by Khaitan & Co. and Baker McKenzie with USD 700 million (across 1 deal).

Under Education, Khaitan (USD 1.01 Billion) topped the table (by value) followed by Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas with deals worth USD 1.002 Billion. Trilegal took the third spot with a deal worth USD 1 Billion.

Aeka Advisors and Ambit claim the No.2 & 3 slot Avendus topped the Venture Intelligence League Table for Transaction Advisor to Private Equity Transactions for Q1 2023 advising 5 deals worth $808 million. Aeka Advisors stood second having advised 3 deals worth $228 million. Ambit followed with 4 deals worth $160 million. PE-VC investments fall 38% in 2023 to below $30 B

The value of investments by Private Equity - Venture Capital (PE-VC) firms in India fell by 38% to less than $30 Billion in 2023. PE-VC firms invested $29.7 Billion (across 756 deals) in Indian companies in 2023, compared to $47.6 Billion (across 1,362 deals) in the previous year, reports Venture Intelligenc e, a research service focused on private company financials, transactions, and their valuations.
